The SharkTuner is a hardware interface between the 928 Fuel and Ignition Computers and a laptop computer. A custom Windows interface program runs on the laptop, and a slave microcontroller in the SharkTuner acts as the interface between the laptop and the Engine Computers.
The SharkTuner allows the operator to make changes in real time to the software of the Engine Computers modifying special EPROM binary files provided with the SharkTuner. The standard EPROM is unplugged from the LH ECU, and the SharkTuner data lead plugged into the EPROM socket. The SharkTuner is powered by the diagnostic connector fitted to all 928s. When any changes to the EPROM data have been finalised, these changes are saved, and this new data file is programmed into a new EPROM, using a low cost EPROM programmer. This modified EPROM is then fitted to the remapped ECU, which then can be refitted to the car.
NEW "PEM" Programmable EPROM Modules available!
The new PEMs enables “flash” programming of the 928 LH and EZK ECU's from MY87 to 95(only, at this time). That is, it allows remapping of the LH and /or EZK ECUs by connecting a laptop to the car's diagnostic system (via a SharkTuner box) without the need for a ribbon cable to the EPROM socket. It can be repeatedly reprogrammed, and the data is secure even when power is removed from the ECU.
The PEM is a small module that plugs into the normal EPROM socket in the LH and EZK ECUs.
Once a PEM is installed in the ECU, the box can then be closed, and the ECU re-installed in the car. No other connections are needed between the SharkTuner and the car other than via the diagnostic connector in order to remap and datalog. You will of course require the usual WBO2 sensor input for remapping the LH ECU.
The other additional advantage is that with a PEM fitted to both LH and EZK, the SharkTuner displays the System monitor, maps and parameters screens without the need for any further setup. Simultaneous data logging of LH and EZK parameters is also possible !
Once remapping is complete for the session, save the file and then just unplug the SharkTuner, the new remapping parameters are stored in the PEM. No need to blow a new EPROM.
The next time any tuning is required, the file in the PEM can be uploaded into the SharkTuner and modified as required, or used for datalogging. It is also possible to use the ribbon cable with an EPROM adaptor in one ECU, and a PEM in the other ECU with the existing SharkTuner box.
The SharkTuner MK1 can be used in the traditional manner with ribbon cable (data lead) connections to the engine computer EPROM sockets and then allowing you to make your custom replacement EPROM replacements, OR or it can be used with the new PEM modules. Only the SharkTuner MK1 has this feature. The NEW Low Cost SharkTuner Mk2 will only work with PEM modules.
SharkTuner Functions &Features LH ECU
- Fuel map editor with operating point indicator
- Auto tune feature for fuel map - "tune when you drive" to a target air/fuel ratio
- Supports 19, 24, 30, 36, 42 lb/hr or any custom size injectors
- Adjustable rev. limiter
- Adjustable flappy valve control
- Data logging with graphical output
- Status screen with real-time display of engine operating variables
- Adjustable idle speed S4/GTS 675rpm or GT 775rpm
- Closed loop or open loop mapping
- Selectable code plug settings
- Separate maps for closed loop or open loop running
- Special maps for the SuperMAF for very high power applications
In addition to changes to the fuel maps, the SharkTuner also allows manipulation of other parameters such as high rpm fuel cut off point ("rev. limiter"), the operation of the inlet resonance valve ("flappy") and fuel cut off under deceleration.

The SharkTuner also provides a data logging facility of many useful parameters. The data logger can run continually, or be triggered at rpm greater than 2000, or when the wide open throttle switch is closed (approx. 2/3 throttle open).
Data captured during a run can be viewed in tabular form in the data logger window or displayed in the graphics processor included on screen.
Alternatively, the data table can be copied and pasted into an Excel spreadsheet using the "Copy all run data" tab, where it can be viewed in tabular or processed using the Chart Wizard into graphical form. Data from several data runs can be displayed on the same graph.
The "System monitor" screen gives useful real time data on the running conditions of the engine under test and modification:
Manipulation of fuel maps is possible on a cell by cell basis, or by capturing a group of cells and incrementing them on a user selected percentage basis, or by a known fixed percentage.
Rapid initial remapping can be carried out with the "Autotune" feature on the applicable fuel maps. Idle, and cruise and WOT CO levels can be auto adjusted to a target value.
Wideband Oxygen Sensor
The SharkTuner is designed for use with a wideband oxygen sensor and associated electronic hardware. A wideband O2 system is essential for any fuel remapping. The standard O2 sensor with add on lambda indicators are NOT suitable as their operating range is too narrow. See related Products below for the Innovate LC-1 Wideband Systems
Functions & Features EZK
- Full set of igntion maps with operating point marker
- System monitor screen with Hall and knock sensor fault indicators
- Full real time monitoring of igntion knocks
- Real time monitoring of per cylinder igntion retard applied by knock protect system
- Comprehensive data logger with graphical output option
- Detonation igntion retard step size and max value of retard editable

SharkTuner Requirements
- A wideband oxygen sensor and associated electronics (see related products below)
- A laptop computer running Windows 98SE/2000/XP, with a serial port (9 pin "D" connector). If a serial port is not available, a USB to serial adapter can be used. Also, in many laptops the laptop itself does not have a serial port but the docking station for the laptop has one.
- If you are not using PEMs, you will need a low cost EPROM reader/writer to burn your custom chips. You can find them on Ebay and most electronic suppliers (Contact us if you need help finding one). These devices require a parallel (printer) port. Alternatively, you may find a local electronics shop that will burn EPROMs for you to your modified files
- Also if not using PEMSs you will need a supply of 2732a (85-86 only) 27C128 or 27C256 EPROMS 120nS in 28 pin DIL plastic package. You can use one time programmable or UV erasable devices.
- A good general knowledge of the principles of engine management systems.
- Be "computer literate"
